A Coordinate Measuring Instrument (CMM) is a device that measures the geometry of physical objects by detecting discrete points on the surface of the object with a probe. Different types of probes are used in CMMs, including mechanical, optical, laser and white light. Depending on the machine, the position of the probe can be manually controlled by an operator or computer. CMM inspection services generally specify the position of a probe in terms of displacement relative to a reference position in a Cartesian coordinate system in three dimensions (i.e. with the XYZ axes). In addition to moving the probe along the X, Y and Z axes, many machines also control the angle of the probe to measure otherwise inaccessible surface.

Specifications
Although all CMM inspection services perform the same functions, each machine type is built and designed differently. When selecting a CMM, an industrial purchaser must take into account the different specifications, the design of the equipment and the inherent characteristics.
The specifications of the machine itself are important in order to fit a work piece correctly and to meet the required measurement possibilities.
        The measurement length is the total distance that a probe can travel to measure in the x, y or z direction.
        The capacity is the maximum size of the object or work piece that can be processed by the machine. A CMM must have sufficient capacity to accommodate the objects that the user must measure.
        The resolution is the smallest increase that the device can measure. A higher resolution indicates a more specific measure.

Measurement Capabilities
CMM inspection services can be designed to perform different types of measurement. These include:
·         Dimensional measurements are sizing  measurements in the x, y and z directions.
·         Profile measurements are performed to record information about the shape or profile of an object. These measurements can be 2D or 3D, depending on the capabilities of the machine.
·         Angle or orientation measurements are made to record the angular information between the points of an object.
·         Depth assignment is constructed by measuring the difference between two stereo images. Stereotypes are consecutive images of the same scene taken at slightly different angles. The farthest objects move relatively little from one image to another, while the objects closest to the viewer continue. A depth map is then created. A single image uses different intensities to represent different depths.
·         Scanning or imaging provides a digital format or image that can visually capture the geometry of the component from measurements performed by the MMM.
·         Shaft measurements are application-specific indications for measurements by CMMs that have been specially designed for tree inspection.
